Melrose High School Algebra 2
Day 6
How do I
pay for it?
At this point you should be getting an idea of what you'd like to do after Melrose. You have taken a personality test, have evaluated your skills and interests, identified a top college option, and thought through some alternative routes as well. Hopefully at this point you have an idea of what direction you'd like to go in after your days at Melrose have come to an end.
Now the question is, how do you pay for this education?
Before you panic, you should know: many have gone before you, taken on student loans, paid off their debt, and made a great living for themselves. It can be done.
But why take out more loans than you need to?
Today you will explore college scholarships. You will write a 6-8 sentence paragraph describing how you intend to pay for your college by targeting specific scholarships.
Scholarship Options - TN Promise (in state, trade or community college). TN Hope. TN Aspire. Alumni alumni alumni!
When you have finished, you should have an outline, basic starting point of which scholarships you plan to target when you apply for this college. Scholarships are free money for whoever is willing to put in the work. So GET TO IT!

- For your top college, search for that school’s scholarships (for example, search “university of memphis scholarships”)
- If your top options is an in-state college, research the Hope Scholarship.
- For in-state community colleges or technical schools, research TNPromise Scholarship.
- EVERYONE: See if you qualify for the Pell Grant!
- What’s unique to you? Did your parents go to college (if not, research “first scholars program” or “first time college scholarship”)? Are you involved in a church, club, band, or have family ties to a fraternity or sorority? Try searching any of these items, like “____________ scholarship.”
